USU's Space Weather Center Upgrades Technologies at Annual Workshop
Officials at Utah State University’s Space Weather Center (SWC) will release two upgrades to existing SWC innovations at the annual Space Weather Workshop in Boulder, Colo., April 27-30.
Version 1.4.0 of “SpaceWx,” an iPhone app developed by the center, will be released via Apple. First introduced in 2009, this app upgrade includes real-time effects from the four major space weather domains: the sun, solar wind, magnetosphere and neutral atmosphere/ionosphere.
The center will also release a product aimed at improving global radio communications. This capability is built upon SWC’s existing Global Assimilation of Ionosphere Measurements system and provides real-time global ray-traces of high-frequency radio signal propagation strength every 15 minutes. Users of this product will include commercial aviation and amateur radio operators.
The Space Weather Workshop is an annual conference that brings industry, academia and government agencies together. It is the nation’s leading conference on issues relating to space weather.
Space weather impacts today’s technologies in several areas, including communications, navigations, spacecraft operations, aviation and electric power. Presentations and discussions at the Space Weather Workshop aim to guide future research by identifying high-priority needs.
The conference also fosters communication among space weather researchers, service providers and service users.
SWC director Kent Tobiska and USU Center for Atmospheric and Space Sciences director and USTAR Space Weather founding member Bob Schunk will make presentations and display research posters throughout the week.
“The Space Weather Workshop is a perfect venue for USU’s Space Weather Center to display the exciting new innovations being developed at Utah State University,” said Tobiska. “The connections we are making with other institutions in the academic and private sector are very important for the development of the Space Weather Center at USU.”
