USU Wind Orchestra Hosts Joe Alessi at Spring Concert

Utah State University’s Wind Orchestra, under the conductorship of Director of Bands Thomas P. Rohrer, hosts Joe Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, in a concert Friday, April 18, on the USU campus. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center (approximately 1110 E. 610 North).

The performance is part of a series of master classes and lessons at the university made possible by a grant from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation to the trombone studio of Todd Fallis, professor of trombone at USU in the department of music.

 

Tickets are $7.50 for the general public, with free admission to USU staff, students and public school band students.

 

The guest artist will perform “Colors” for trombone and wind ensemble by European composer Bert Apermont, as well as the Latin-flavored “Bolivar” by Eric Cook.

 

The USU Wind Orchestra will also perform “Symphony No. 3” by Vittorio Giannini, “Symphonic Suite” by Clifton Williams, “The Dragoon’s Farewell” by Brant Karrick and a world premiere of “Illegal Procedure for Wind Ensemble” by Rohrer.

 

The evening’s guest was appointed principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic in spring 1985. He began musical studies in his native California with his father, Joseph Alessi, Sr. As a high school student in San Rafael, Calif., he was a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony. He continued his musical training at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music.

 

Before joining the philharmonic, Alessi was second trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra for four seasons and principal trombone of L’Orchestre symphonique de Montreal for one season. Additionally, he has performed as guest principal trombonist with the London Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, led by Pierre Boulez.

 

Alessi is on the faculty of The Julliard School, and his students now occupy posts with many major symphony orchestras in the United States and internationally. He is a clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company, has given master classes throughout the world and has toured Europe extensively as a master teacher and recitalist.
