USU Will Create New Center for Women and Gender

Three Utah State University programs will combine and become the Center for Women and Gender. A program and reception are scheduled Monday, March 29, to celebrate the creation of the center. Activities begin at 5 p.m. at the Evan N. Stevenson Ballroom of the Taggart Student Center on the USU campus. All are invited.

 

The Center for Women and Gender brings together USU’s Women’s Center, Women and Gender Studies and the Women and Gender Research Institute

 

“The new center will provide a wonderful synergism of energy, activities and expertise from three previously separate, successful and active programs,” said Ann Austin, vice provost for faculty development and diversity. “Each was dedicated to a different aspect of the land-grant mission. The new center will form a vibrant, cohesive unit manifesting in total the land-grant mission.”

 

According to goals established during its creation, the Center for Women and Gender will provide a professional and social climate to enhance opportunities through learning, diversity, discovery and enhancement. In addition to offering coursework in women and gender studies, the center will foster opportunities for scientific discourse, personal and professional development and networking.

 

The center will be administratively housed in one of USU’s academic colleges. The college home is still to be determined as is the physical location of the center.

 

Raymond T. Coward, USU executive vice president and provost, offered thanks to the efforts of the planning committee.

 

“We are delighted to accept the recommendation of the planning committee to create the Center for Women and Gender,” said USU’s Executive Vice President and Provost Raymond T. Coward. “We thank the committee for its diligent efforts and hard work. With the establishment of the center, we are excited to launch the next chapter in USU’s ongoing commitment to women and gender issues.”
