USU Wants to Inspire Your Teen to Learn Science this Summer
Utah State University is again offering summer laboratory experiences for high school students interested in biological sciences and engineering. The 13th annual Biotechnology Summer Academy will be held July 8-12.
Summer Academy is a one-week biotechnology program for students interested in any science field. It offers a chance to learn lab techniques in a hands-on, inquiry-based environment, while being introduced to the college experience.
Participants have the opportunity to interact with faculty, graduate students, post-docs and others as they are led through the planning and practice of research experiments. The program uses lectures, demonstrations and lab-based research to expose students to the far-reaching options in the biotechnology fields.
“We hope to see students gain a new understanding of biotechnology” said Afifa Sabir, education coordinator and program director for the Center for Integrated BioSystems. “Hands-on learning is a wonderful way to introduce these students to future careers.”
The program is open to students entering grades 11 and 12. Participants are mentored by USU faculty from various disciplines. The scope of biological science topics includes everything from plants, soils, food, nutrition, animal and veterinary sciences, to current topics in genomics and cloning.
Biotechnology Summer Academy, sponsored by the Center for Integrated BioSystems, is held on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Tuition is $200 and includes five days of room and board. An advanced program is available for returning students.
