USU Testing Center Administers More Than 27,000 Tests in Two Months

Since its opening on Oct. 3, 2016, Utah State University’s new Testing Center in Logan has successfully administered 27,318 exams. The center is located in the Merrill-Cazier library with a separate south-facing entrance where students can quickly and easily access it.

“We couldn’t have hit such a high number of exams without the convenient and updated online scheduling process,” said Kevin Shanley, USU’s director of E-Learning and System Support. “The student workers and staff did a great job of making it easy and stress-free for students to take exams and for the faculty to schedule them.”

There were 322 faculty members who used the Testing Center during the fall 2017 semester, encompassing 223 courses. According to Shanley, the Testing Center’s amenities, such as laptops, a quiet atmosphere and new website, have made it a go-to option for delivering exams. USU Faculty, especially those with large enrollment classes of 50 or more students, have seen great success with the new Testing Center.

“The USU Testing Center is a win-win for both students and faculty,” said Scott Ensign, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “There is flexibility with scheduling and students can choose a date and time that works best for them. The online testing systems are in a controlled, monitored environment with plenty of space so students don’t feel cramped and uncomfortable.”

The Testing Center expects to administer more than 30,000 exams during the spring 2017 semester. The center recently began delivering Math Placement tests thanks to its growing popularity among students.

“The quiet room, helpful staff and organized process at the Testing Center make for a calm environment,” said one USU student through an anonymous survey. “It’s nice to be able to sit down and stay focused on the material, especially during finals week.”
