USU Team Cleans Up at Clean Snowmobile Challenge

A group of Utah State University engineering students cleaned up at the seventh annual Clean Snowmobile Challenge, taking home first place in the challenge’s zero-emissions division.

“It was so great to take home this win, and I am so proud of our team,” said Nathan Hansen, USU mechanical and aerospace engineering senior and team project leader.

 

The team was not eligible to compete against traditional gas sleds in the competition, and Hansen hopes to change that in the future. He said the USU sled performed as well as the gas sleds in the competition and actually won in noise pollution and emissions.

 

The Clean Snowmobile Challenge was started by the Society of Automotive Engineers as an effort to build environmentally friendly machines that will meet the 2012 federal emissions standards.

 

The USU team includes Paul Carpenter, senior, electrical and computer engineering; Scott Duhadway, freshman, mechanical and aerospace engineering; Steven Hanson, senior, mechanical and aerospace engineering; Nathaniel Hollingsworth, senior, mechanical and aerospace engineering; Jed Jenkins, senior, mechanical and aerospace engineering; Denton Johnson, senior, mechanical and aerospace engineering; Ashley Kelly, junior, mechanical and aerospace engineering; Justin Maughan, junior, civil and environmental engineering; Rob Silver, senior, electrical and computer engineering; Merin Swasey, senior, mechanical and aerospace engineering; and Ira Tibbits, junior, mechanical and aerospace engineering.
