USU's Symphonic Band Presents the Colors of Music

Various types of music will be showcased in Utah State University’s Symphonic Band concert “Kaleidoscope” Thursday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the Kent Concert Hall, on the university campus.

“The assortment of music styles will create an audible kaleidoscope for audience members to enjoy,” said Greg Wheeler, associate director of bands in the Caine College of the Arts. “Everything from a festival piece to one about Saturn will be presented in this concert.”

Accompanying the Symphonic Band is the USU Brass Ensemble, student directed by Sarah Keene.

“We are excited to perform with the Symphonic Band and present our music to the audience,” said Keene.

Various pieces of music will be performed, including a Billy Joel arrangement of “Air Dublinesque” and the “Iberian Escapades” by Robert Sheldon. Another piece is “Saturn: The Ringed Planet” by Rob Romeyn that depicts a space-age voyage to Saturn. The USU Brass Ensemble will perform an arrangement of the Beatles’ “Blackbird and I Will,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and a movement from “Divertissement.”

Nicholas Morrison, associate dean of the Caine College of the Arts, and Thomas Rohrer, director of bands, will be two guest conductors for the evening. Morrison will conduct “With Quiet Courage,” a ballad written by Larry Daehn. Rohrer will conduct “Northwest Rising” by Robert Sheldon, a piece which follows a hot air balloon ride.

The USU Symphonic Band is made up of more than 80 students from various majors. This is an open group, with auditions only for chair placement.
