USU Symphonic Band Presents Spring Concert
Utah State University's Symphonic Band, along with the USU Trombone Ensemble, is in concert Thursday, April 16, 7:30 p.m., Kent Concert Hall, Chase Fine Arts Center.
The Utah State University Symphonic Band, under the direction of Thomas P. Rohrer and Gregory Wheeler, will perform its spring concert Thursday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the USU Logan campus.
The USU Trombone Ensemble, under the direction of Todd Fallis, will also perform.
“The spring concert is the high point for the Symphonic Band, a 70-member ensemble that includes music and non-music majors performing the finest in wind literature, both old and new,” Rohrer said. “The concert annually features guest chamber ensembles, with the Trombone Ensemble filling the slot this time.”
Performing standard works for concert band, the Symphonic Band concert includes a performance of Northwest Rising by Robert Sheldon and The Ascension by Robert W. Smith. Vintage band works in the concert include Sea Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, March Grandioso by Roland Seitz and Symphonic Dance No. 3 by Clifton Williams.
The Trombone Ensemble will perform Georgia on My Mind by Hoagy Carmichael, The Star of County Down by Sam Jewkes, Hosanna by Rob Gardner, Borogoditse Devo by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Frantic Flight by Wycliffe Gordon, Sally Gardens by Sara Houghton and St. Louis Blues by W.C. Handy.
“The Symphonic Band performs three concerts per year,” said Rohrer. “The membership of the Symphonic Band represents USU’s finest students from all disciplines on campus who enjoy continuing their band experience while pursuing the degree program of their choice.
“The USU Trombone Ensemble includes 18 trombone majors and non-majors who enjoy playing music specifically written or arranged for the instrument.”
The USU bands’ upcoming schedule includes the Wind Orchestra’s spring concert Friday, April 24, and also features the USU High School Band Festival.
