USU's Speech and Debate Team Concludes Season
Three students represented Utah State University as members of the USU Speech and Debate Team at the final Northwest Forensic Conference tournament at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The tournament was held the first weekend of February.
According to coach Tom Worthen, all three USU students broke into the elimination rounds in debate. Among those participating, Garrett Smith placed second in informative speaking and fifth in the open division IPDA debate. Ben Powell was honored as the second-best debater at the tournament and placed fifth in junior IPDA debate. Mariah Andreasen broke to Octofinals and placed ninth in junior IPDA debate.
The season’s conference awards from all three of the region’s tournaments were presented. USU took second place overall in individual speech events sweepstakes. The team marked a third-place finish overall in the conference.
In concluding the year, the team thanks the Languages, Philosophy and Communication Studies Department and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences for supporting the team.
