USU Science Week 'Shoots for the Stars' Nov. 7-11
All Aggies are invited to participate in USU's 2016 'Science Week: Shoot for the Stars’ Nov. 7-11.
Members of the Utah State University community are invited to enjoy brain-energizing fun as USU’s College of Science Student Council hosts ‘Science Week’ Nov. 7-11. Theme for the celebration week is “Science Shoots for the Stars.”
“We invite all Aggies to channel their ‘inner geek’ and join us in some great activities,” says Joseph Day, USU Science Senator.
Monday, Nov. 7
All Aggies are invited to receive a “cookie for a compliment” as they write a note of gratitude to a faculty or staff member in exchange for a sweet treat. Stations with writing supplies and cookies will be available at 11 a.m. on the Taggart Student Center patio and in the Biology-Natural Resources Building foyer and will be open while supplies last. Monday evening, Aggies are invited to join USU scientists in “Stuffing the Bus” at 7 p.m. in the parking lot north of Maverick Stadium. Bring non-perishable food items to fill an Aggie Shuttle bus, with donations going to USU’s Student Nutrition Access Center and the Cache Community Food Pantry.
Tuesday, Nov. 8
Aggie Scientists are accustomed to waiting for results, as anticipation is part of the scientific process. We’ll show you how to enjoy waiting for ELECTION results, as we gather from 7-10 p.m. in the TSC Hub for long-awaited national presidential election returns. Free refreshments will be served.
Wednesday, Nov. 9
The USU Science Council hosts College of Science Alumni Networking Night from 7-9 p.m. at the Haight Alumni Center on the Logan campus. All are welcome. Enjoy free refreshments, while talking with alumni about their post-graduation adventures.
Thursday, Nov. 10
“There’s antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium…” It wouldn’t be Science Week without rousing rounds of “Elemental Bingo.” All USU students are encouraged to brush up on the periodic table of elements and test their knowledge from 7-8:30 p.m. in the TSC Stevenson Ballroom. Participants are eligible for prizes.
Friday, Nov. 11
Bust out your favorite Harry Potter, Star Trek or Mission Impossible costume, as Science Unwrapped’s “Science at the Movies” series welcomes USU Physics alum John Howell ‘95, who presents “Hiding in Plain Sight: Exploring Cloaking Technology.” The fun begins at 7 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the Logan campus.
Howell, a professor of quantum optics at the University of Rochester, shares cutting-edge research that makes those awesome movie exploits seem not-so-far-fetched. Admission is free and all are welcome. Hands-on learning activities and free refreshments follow his talk.
USU’s College of Science includes the academic departments of chemistry and biochemistry, biology, mathematics and statistics, geology and physics.
