USU's Science Unwrapped 'Hides in Plain Sight' Nov. 11
USU alum John Howell '95 is featured Science Unwrapped speaker Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in USU's Eccles Science Learning Center Auditorium. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.
Could scientists actually create an invisibility cloak like Harry Potter’s surprise Christmas gift? What if the U.S. Air Force could make fighter jets disappear like the Romulans’ Bird of Prey aircraft in the Star Trek TV series? Could operatives really sneak into a high-security building using optical camouflage like that depicted in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol?
Utah State University’s Science Unwrapped will probe these questions and more at the public outreach program’s Friday, Nov. 11 program, “Hiding in Plain Sight: Exploring Cloaking Devices.” Featured speaker is USU Physics alum John Howell ’95, professor of quantum optics at the University of Rochester.
The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium, Room 130, of the Eccles Science Learning Center. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Howell’s talk. Hosted by USU’s College of Science, admission is free and all ages are welcome.
Howell will reference Harry Potter, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, as he discusses his research involving optical technologies that fool the eye. Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters from any of these movies.
The Nov. 11 presentation is the grand finale of Science Unwrapped’s fall 2016 Science at the Movies series, as well as the college’s 2016 Science Week celebration. Science Unwrapped returns with its new, spring 2017 series Science Fact, Science Fiction Jan. 27.
