USU's Science Unwrapped 'Goes to Movies' in New Series
Hosted by USU's College of Science, Science Unwrapped features family friendly presentations and hands-on learning activities all ages can enjoy together.
Have you ever been watching a sci-fi movie and wondered, “Could that really happen? Is that what we can expect in the future?”
Utah State University’s Science Unwrapped seeks to answer those questions and more as the popular public outreach program heads to the movies in its new fall 2016 “Science at the Movies” series. The fun kicks off Friday, Sept. 16, with scholars from a variety of disciplines.
“We’re very excited to welcome the public to this fascinating series,” says Nancy Huntly, Science Unwrapped chair, director of USU’s Ecology Center and professor in the Department of Biology. “This fall, we’ll explore scenes from some movie favorites, including Harry Potter, Star Trek and Jodie Foster’s Contact.”
Hosted by USU’s College of Science, Science Unwrapped welcomes inquiring minds of all ages to its family friendly presentations.
At a glance, upcoming “Science at the Movies” presentations include:
* Friday, Sept. 16, Swarm Science: Taking the Sting Out of Filming Bees -- Entomologist Jamie Strange, adjunct assistant professor in USU’s Department of Biology and research entomologist with the USDA-ARS Pollinating Insects Research Unit at USU
* Friday, Oct. 14, Starstruck Science -- USU Physics alum Sydney Chamberlin, postdoctoral fellow at the Pennsylvania State University
* Friday, Nov. 11, Hiding in Plain Sight: Exploring Invisibility Cloaking Technology -- Quantum optics expert John Howell, professor at the University of Rochester
Each presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium, Room 130, of the Eccles Science Learning Center on USU’s Logan campus. Admission is free.
Initiated by the college in February 2009, Science Unwrapped introduces science in a relaxed, entertaining manner. Presentations begin with a brief lecture, followed by learning activities and refreshments. Each event draws several hundred guests, with attendees ranging from preschoolers to senior citizens.
