USU Science Unwrapped Explores Patterns in Nature in New Series
Throughout nature, patterns emerge with surprising frequency. Symmetries, trees, chains, spirals, waves and other visible regularities appear in rocks, plants, water and animals.
What does it mean and how do scientists study this phenomenon?
To explore these questions, USU’s College of Science presents “Matter of Patterns,” Science Unwrapped’s new series for fall 2014. Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to join in the journey as scholars from a variety of disciplines discuss these wonders of nature.
“We have a blockbuster line-up of speakers for fall 2014,” says Nancy Huntly, Science Unwrapped chair, director of USU’s Ecology Center and professor in the Department of Biology. “Our presentations offer something for everyone.”
At a glance, upcoming “Matter of Patterns” presentations include:
- Friday, Sept. 12, Chemical Attractions — Chemist Lisa Berreau, professor and interim dean of USU’s College of Science
- Friday, Oct. 10, Seeing the Forest for the Trees — Statistician Richard Cutler, professor and head of USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics
- Friday, Nov. 14, Unwrapping Science on the Radio — Journalist Joe Palca, science correspondent, National Public Radio (Palca appears courtesy of Utah Public Radio.)
Each presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium, Room 130, of the Eccles Science Learning Center. Admission is free.
Initiated by the college in February 2009, Science Unwrapped introduces science in a relaxed, entertaining manner. Presentations begin with a brief lecture, followed by learning activities and refreshments. Each event draws several hundred guests, with attendees ranging from preschoolers to senior citizens.

Back from summer break, Science Unwrapped resumes with the new 'Matter of Patterns' series, Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center auditorium. Each gathering is free and all ages are welcome.
Now in its fifth year, Science Unwrapped features family friendly presentations and hands-on learning activities all ages can enjoy together.
