USU's Science Unwrapped 'Dances with Stars' Friday, Oct. 14

USU Honors alum Sydney Chamberlin is featured Science Unwrapped speaker Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. in USU's Eccles Science Learning Center Auditorium. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

Physicist Sydney Chamberlin often refers to dead stars as ‘zombie stars’ for comedic effect, but her research on these stars, gravitational waves and other cosmic phenomena is ‘dead serious.’

The Utah State University Honors alum will discuss her out-of-this-world research as featured speaker at Science Unwrapped Friday, Oct. 14. A postdoctoral fellow at the Pennsylvania State University, Chamberlin presents “Dancing with the Stars: The Unheard Symphony of Gravity” at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center Emert Auditorium, Room 130, on campus.

“There are two types of dead stars: black holes and neutron stars or pulsars,” says the USU Honors alum, who earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from USU in 2009. “I’ll discuss the distinct characteristics of each, but gravity will be the main character of my talk, as dead stars are a result of gravity.”

Chamberlin, who completed a doctorate in physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2015, is a member of the renowned LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) Science Collaboration, which reported the ground-breaking first recording of gravitational waves from space on Sept. 14, 2016.

Chamberlin’s talk, free and open to all ages, is followed by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. USU student and community groups will offer educational exhibits.

Hosted by USU’s College of Science, Chamberlin’s presentation, which features references to the films Interstellar, Contact, IQ and Wally, is the second of three talks in Science Unwrapped’s fall 2016 “Science at the Movies” series.

“We’re very excited to welcome the public to this fascinating series,” says Nancy Huntly, Science Unwrapped chair, director of USU’s Ecology Center and professor in the Department of Biology. “This is a great opportunity to learn some behind-the-scenes secrets behind the filming of a number of popular sci-fi movies.”

USU alum and University of Rochester quantum optics expert John Howell presents the final talk in Science Unwrapped’s fall series, Hiding in Plain Sight: Exploring Invisibility Cloaking Technology, on Friday, Nov. 11.
