USU's School of Graduate Studies Awards 2007-08 Scholarships, Fellowships

Major fellowships and scholarship awards have been presented by Utah State University’s School of Graduate Studies for the 2007-08 year. The awards include a number of fellowships and the Seely-Hinckley Scholarship.

Nineteen students received full or partial Presidential Fellowships. Full fellowships are valued at $12,000. Eleven students were awarded $15,000 Vice President for Research Fellowships and 10 Dissertation Fellowships of $5,000 were presented. Two students received the Martin Luther King Fellowships and one student received the 2007-08 Dr. Dinesh and Kapana Patel Doctoral Gradaute Fellowship, a $5,000 award. Six graduate students were recipients of the Seely-Hinckley scholarship, an award for outstanding graduate students who face series financial difficulties.

 

Below is a list of fellowship and scholarship recipients.

 

Presidential Fellowships: Diana Keith (Arco, Idaho; Nutrition and Food Sciences), Jessica Gundy (Marina Del Ray, Calif.; Psychology), Merrill Jones (Kanab, Utah; Psychology), Alice Keyl (Anchorage, Alaska; Special Education), Scott Porter (Kearns, Utah; Civil and Environmental Engineering), Paul Johnson (Orem, Utah; Political Science), Emily Wheeler (Logan, Utah; Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning ), Tracy Bowerman (Bend, Ore.; Watershed Sciences), Stephanie Kraft (Fairfield, Tenn.; Watershed Sciences), Christopher Hall (Salt Lake City, Utah; Computer Science), Mark Haney (Logan, Utah; Chemistry), Miti Phadnis (Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India; Electrical & Computer Engineering), and Dusti McEwen (Saint George, Utah; Biological and Irrigation Engineering). In the College of Business, Traci Jonsson (Fruit Heights, Utah; Master of Business Administration), Kelley O’Reilly (Vancouver, Wash.; Management Information Systems), Brad Schultz (Ogden, Utah; Accounting), John Thomas (West Jordan, Utah; Master of Business Administration), Adam Tuft (Logan, Utah; Master of Business Administration), and Brian Watson (Provo, Utah; Accounting), received partial Presidential fellowships.

 

Vice President for Research Fellowships: Kimberly Elwood (Logan, Utah; Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences), Aidan Christian (Cheltenham, England; Psychology), Joel Gardner (Salt Lake City, Utah; Instructional Technology), Adam Pyszczynski (Overland Park, Kan.; Psychology), Jonathan Thomas (Centerville, Utah; Instructional Technology), Jeffrey Carver (Kaysville, Utah; Electrical and Computer Engineering), Zhuorui Song (Guangzhou, Guangdong, China; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), Stephanie Malin (Kirksville, Mo.; Sociology), Jason McClure (Hancock, Mich.; Watershed Sciences), David Hansen (Idaho Falls, Idaho; Physics), and Debra Lowe (Lehi, Utah; Biology).

 

Dissertation Fellowships: Kenneth Aston (Twin Falls, Idaho; Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Sciences), Samson Gebreab (Asmara, Eritrea; Watershed Sciences), Chaitanya Gharpure (Pune, Maharashtra, India; Computer Science), Stacey MacArthur (Orem, Utah; Family, Consumer, and Human Development), Leslie Morris (Logan, Utah; Wildland Resources), Alison Scoville (Seattle, Wash.; Biology), Tian Tang (Guizhou, China; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), Susan Wilmot (Durham, N.C.; Environment and Society), Jeff Wu (Guangzhou, Guangdong, China; Nutrition & Food Sciences), and Dimitry Zoubarev (Moscow, Russia; Chemistry).

 

The Dissertation Fellowship is intended to provide outstanding doctoral students with additional time to draft and revise their dissertations. For many doctoral students, the need to teach or to serve as a research assistant interferes with the ability to complete dissertation work in a timely manner. This fellowship aims to help doctoral students move more efficiently and quickly toward the completion of their dissertations.

 

Martin Luther King Fellowships are awarded to African American graduate students and recipients for 2007-08 are Andre Bala (Houston, Texas), a master’s student in Psychology, and Desaree Williams (Spring Valley, Calif.), a doctoral student in Biology. Each were awarded $10,000.

 

Elizabeth Thomas (Hyderabad, India), a doctoral student in biology, was awarded the 2007-2008 Dr. Dinesh and Kalpana Patel Doctoral Graduate Fellowship. This fellowship, in the amount of $5,000, is for underrepresented and international doctoral students.

 

Seely-Hinckley Scholarship: Esmat Barkat (Stockton, Calif.; Physics), Julia Cunningham (Magna, Utah; History), Michelle Oldham (Murray, Utah; Plant, Soils, & Climate), Julia Squires (Vernal, Utah; History), Cory Vorel (Washington Terrace, Utah; Biology) and Rebecca Scully (Indian Lake, New York; Wildland Resources).
