USU Offers Chicano/a Film Series in Advance of Tanner Symposium

Utah State University will offer a Chicano/a film series throughout February and March, with introductions by USU faculty. The series begins Feb. 7.

The film series is held in Merrill-Cazier Library room 154 on Thursdays, from 5- 7 p.m. Directors and writers from several of the films will appear at USU’s 2008 O.C. Tanner Symposium, “Celebratión: Latino/a Contributions to U.S. Culture,” April 2-4. The film series first offering Feb. 7 is La Bamba (1987), written and directed by Luis Valdez, starring Lou Diamond Phillips; Feb. 14, it’s The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez based on the book With a Pistol in His Hand (1982), directed by Robert M. Young and starring Edward James Olmos; Feb. 21,Los Mineros (1991), written by Paul Espinosa, and narrated by Luis Valdez; Feb. 29, Real Women Have Curves (2002), directed by Patricia Cardoso, starring America Ferrera; March 6, A Day without A Mexican (2004), directed by Sergio Arau, starring Caroline Aaron. The series concludes March 20 with Zoot Suit (1981), written and directed by Luis Valdez and starring Daniel Valdez and Edward James Olmos.

 

The Chicano/a Film Series is sponsored by the Department of English and the American Studies Program at Utah State University. All events are free, and everyone is invited.
