USU Museum Offers Hands-On Summer Workshops

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, located on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, is offering a hands-on workshop that integrates creative problem solving with art-making instruction. There will be two summer workshops open to teens (13 and older) and adults.

Building Sculpture to Scale, an artist-led sculpture workshop, will be offered June 19-23, 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday. Classes will be taught in the art wing of the Chase Fine Arts Center, located adjacent to the museum.

 

Richard M. Johnston, internationally and regionally recognized public art sculptor, will teach foundation art skills of three-dimensional construction, culminating in the creation of one or more large-scale sculptural works. No prior art experience is necessary and all abilities and ages from teens to seniors are welcome.

 

The workshop will culminate in an exhibit and public reception on campus of work produced. Johnston teaches at California State University, San Bernardino, and was a co-presenter for the Utah Art Educators Association. His work is on exhibit in the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and at the entrance of the Eccles Conference Center on the campus of Utah State University.

 

Previous workshop participants and NEHMA members will receive a 15 percent tuition discount if registered by May 31. Regular registration will be open until June 9. Tuition is $137.50. Enrollment is limited. All materials are provided. The cost of this program is partially underwritten by a grant from the Frederick Q. Lawson Foundation.

 

Frame by Frame is a stop-motion animation workshop offered June 26-29, 9 a.m.-noon.

 

Frame by Frame is a hands-on creative workshop using classic video making techniques of capturing each increment of motion with each frame of video. Taught by graphic design professor Dave Smellie, students will explore the elements of art and principles of design and its relationship to jazz or classical music in a stop-motion animation.

 

The animations created in the workshop will be presented at a screening on June 30 at 7 p.m. in FAV 150. The screening is free and open to the public.
