USU Mourns with Virginia Tech

Dear students, faculty and staff,

The world in which we live is so much smaller and the connections are never more apparent than when tragedy strikes. While we may never comprehend the reason for the senseless killings at Virginia Tech, we do understand the grief and emptiness that now hang over its campus.

We offer our deepest condolences to our fellow land-grant university, Virginia Tech, and to its students, faculty and staff. It is indeed a tragedy to lose so many of the bright and talented faces of the future, and we mourn with the community, families and friends of those who lost their lives.

As land-grant universities, USU and Virginia Tech collaborate and work together on projects in many fields, including engineering, science and agriculture. Many of our USU faculty and students have collaborated with those who have been affected by the horrific events at Virginia Tech. In fact, as the tragedy unfolded, a group of Virginia Tech soil science students were on the USU campus at a soil competition. Our thoughts are with them all.

To our USU students, please know we are aware this tragic event affects everyone in different ways. For those who need a listening ear, please know you have the full resources of the university available to you at any time.

Our university has planned several events to honor and support those affected by the tragedy. A memorial is planned, Friday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center. Everyone is invited and the event is free and open to the public. That same day, USU will also participate in the “Orange and Maroon Effect” day, and those who choose to participate can wear orange and maroon to commemorate those who were lost. Orange and maroon ribbons will also be handed out in the Taggart Student Center Friday. Monday, April 23, USU’s Carillon Bells in Old Main tower will ring two times at 7:15 a.m. and 30 times at 9:45 a.m. to mark the one-week anniversary of the tragedy.

As they prepare for the difficult days ahead, we would like to express our thoughts of sympathy to Virginia Tech during this time of such monumental loss.

Sincerely,

Stan L. Albrecht

President
