USU Launches 'Big Blue' SMS Chatbot to Strengthen Student Support, Connection

Utah State University’s Division of Student Success is introducing a new text-based support initiative designed to help students stay connected, informed and successful throughout their college experience.

On May 6, undergraduate students enrolled in summer classes on the Logan campus received an introductory text message from “Big Blue,” Student Success’s new SMS chatbot created to provide timely answers, personalized check-ins and easy access to campus resources.

Developed in partnership with EdSights, Big Blue is a behaviorally smart chatbot built to engage with students in two-way text conversations. Named after USU’s mascot, the chatbot will serve as a virtual companion that checks in on students’ experiences, helps identify challenges and connects them with relevant support services.

In addition to proactive outreach, Big Blue can respond to student questions on a wide range of topics related to being a USU student. From academic deadlines and campus services to involvement opportunities and general university information, the service will offer assistance via texting, a format that students already use every day.

The initiative is part of the university's broader effort to strengthen retention and student success by maintaining meaningful connections with students beyond the classroom. Through regular check-ins, Big Blue will foster a sense of virtual community and provide another avenue for students to seek help when challenges arise.

USU will internally store and maintain all data received through the platform.

May 6 marked a soft launch of the program with Logan campus summer undergraduate students. If successful, Student Success plans to expand Big Blue this fall to all Logan undergraduate students, with future consideration for Statewide Campuses and graduate students.

Students and USU Community members with questions about the Big Blue chatbot can email askBigBlue@usu.edu.
