USU Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble Shake It Up with a Latin Flair
Utah State University’s Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble present “Latin Shake Up” Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the USU Performance Hall.
“The evening’s program will take the audience down memory lane and end with a Latin twist of modern jazz,” said Greg Wheeler, director of the USU Jazz Orchestra.
The USU Jazz Orchestra will pay homage to Bob Mintzer, a tenor saxophonist and composer.
“His unique style contributes highly to big band literature and great tenor saxophone performance,” said Wheeler.
Tunes performed by the USU Jazz Orchestra include Bob Mintzer’s Ellis Island, Carla, Aacha and Mr. Fonebone. The group will end with the Latin piece Mueva Los Huesos.
The USU Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Todd Fallis, will perform hits such as Jimmy Van Heusen’s Polka Dots and Moonbeams and Shorty Rogers’ 1954 classic Basie Eyes. The ensemble will play the Latin rock hit Old San Juan, originally recorded by the fusion band Spyro Gyra. Finally, the jazz ensemble will pay homage to Count Basie himself by performing the 1981 classic Flight to Nassau.
“The USU jazz bands are fortunate to have visiting guest tenor saxophonist David Branter join them during the concert,” said Wheeler. “We are honored to feature him on a variety of the selections.”
Branter is a classical and jazz saxophonist. He is currently the department head and director of the jazz ensembles at the Vancouver Community College.
Tickets for the USU event are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and youth, $5 for USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID. Tickets can be purchased in person at the CCA Box Office located in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center, online or by calling the box office, 435-797-8022.
