USU's Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble Present Annual Fall Concert
Two Utah State University jazz groups — the USU Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble — present their fall celebration concert, “Jazztober Fest,” Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the USU Performance Hall.
“Two talented groups of students will payhomage to the past and present with several jazz standards, along with some contemporary fare,” said Greg Wheeler, director of the USU Jazz Orchestra.
USU Music Department faculty member Todd Fallis leads the Jazz Ensemble.
“The USU Jazz Ensemble will perform a combination of familiar and new songs featuring well-known classics such as Fly Me to the Moon and Miles Davis’ timeless blues chart Freddie Freeloader,” Fallis said.
On the contemporary front, the USU Jazz Ensemble perform the rock chart Jody Grind by Horace Silver, the Jimmy Van Heusen swing chart of Like Someone in Love and Thad Jones’ rock shuffle Don't Get Sassy.
The USU Jazz Orchestra brings an eclectic set to the second half of the concert representing some of the old and new. Selections include Semi-mental Journey, a takeoff of the old Sentimental Journey, along with a tune by Hank Levy entitled Thetis, an Afro-Cuban Samba piece.
“This concert will be an upbeat, toe-tapping experience for all jazz enthusiasts and is the first of many this year,” said Wheeler.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and youth, $5 for USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID. Tickets can be purchased in person at the CCA Box Office located in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center, online or by calling 435-797-8022.
