USU Jazz Ensemble and Orchestra Presents Concert Dec. 7
The Utah State University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra welcomes saxophonist Norbert Stachel to campus, where he will appear as a guest artist at the jazz concert Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall.
Stachel has appeared with a number of well-known groups and musicians over the years.
"Norbert is probably best known for his four-year stint as tenor saxophonist for the East Bay funk supergroup 'Tower of Power,'" said USU Director of Jazz Studies Jon Gudmundson. “But when I met him last summer at the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival, he was touring with trumpet legend Freddy Hubbard, and that ain’t bad, either!”
What really impresses one about Stachel is the sheer number of things that he’s good at, said Gudmundson. He can play any style convincingly, plays many woodwind instruments besides the saxophone, and to top it off, he understands the physics of how wind instruments work and how to make them play better. This man is so talented on several levels, he said.
Stachel will appear with both USU big bands. The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Todd Fallis, will also perform vocal features, as they prepare for the Jazz at the Sky Club swing dance event, which is scheduled for Feb. 16, 17 and 18 at USU’s Taggart Student Center. The Jazz Orchestra, directed by Jon Gudmundson, will perform Thad Jones’ magnum opus “Central Park North,” Fred Sturm’s mysterious treatment of Steely Dan’s “Pretzel Logic” and two classic vocal arrangements featuring Meghan Bowen and Kent Braddy: “Time After Time” and “Beyond the Sea.”SHARE
