USU Hosts 2nd Annual Utah Inorganic/Organometallic Symposium

Scientists throughout the state pursuing research in areas ranging from renewable energy to medicine will descend on Utah State University’s Logan campus for the Second Annual Utah Inorganic/Organometallic Symposium Friday and Saturday, June 19-20, 2015.

“This is an excellent networking opportunity for students and faculty,” says Yujie Sun, assistant professor in USU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and hosting chair of this year’s gathering. “Such opportunities are not common outside of national conferences. This symposium provides students with opportunities to gain critical feedback from peers at the local level.”

Sun organized this year’s symposium with colleagues from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University and was also a co-chair for last year’s inaugural conference held at the U.

The symposium, held in the Eccles Science Learning Center, opens Friday, June 19, at 8:30 a.m., with a welcoming breakfast and keynote address in ESLC 046 by Morris Bullock, Lab Fellow and director of the Center for Molecular Electrocatalysis at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Admission is free and the public is invited to the gathering, which also features research presentations and poster sessions. Career-building workshops are available to students with pre-registration.

“The purpose of the symposium is to foster ideas and collaboration amongst the various inorganic and organometallic groups at universities throughout the state,” Sun says. “Additionally, it gives students and post docs an opportunity to present their work, hone their presentation skills and boost their self-confidence.”

To fund the conference, Sun and his co-chairs secured a $4,000 grant from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Events Sponsorship Program, a $250 grant from the Division of Inorganic Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and additional support from the USU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

“We plan to hold UIOS each summer on a rotating basis at the U, USU and BYU,” he says. “Next year’s gathering will be at BYU.”
