USU Gymnastics Returns to Spectrum for In-State Battle against Southern Uta

Utah State [University] gymnastics is set for its fourth home meet of the season when it takes on No. 22 Southern Utah in the Spectrum Friday night [Feb. 20] at 7 p.m. Friday night is “Pink Night” for USU gymnastics, and the first 100 fans will receive a free shirt. Any fan who is wearing pink will receive free entrance to the meet.

Live streaming and live stats links will be made available on utahstateaggies.com prior to the meet on Friday for fans who are unable to attend the meet.

The Thunderbirds are coming off a 195.500-194.975 win against BYU in Provo, where Natalie Trejo won the beam title with a 9.875. Southern Utah has not had a gymnast compete in the all-around in its last three meets, relying more in its team depth than anything else. Danielle Ramirez leads the team with a 9.842 vault average, while Jamie Armijo tops the Thunderbirds with a 9.846 bars average. Stacie Webb leads SUU with a 9.835 beam average, and Brittney Jensen holds a 9.763 floor average. Tyly Bozzuto is the only T-Bird to have competed in the all-around this year, averaging a 38.875, however she has not competed in the all-around in the last three meets.

Southern Utah is currently ranked 22nd in the nation with a 195.214 average team score. The Thunderbirds rank 23rd on vault with a 48.943 average, 14th on bars with a 48.968 average, 27th on beam with a 48.539 average and 35th on floor with a 48.764 average. Individually, Armijo is tied for 32nd on bars with a 9.846 average. Webb is tied for 22nd on beam with a 9.837 average.

Southern Utah holds a slight, 40-39 edge over Utah State in the series history, however the Aggies hold a commanding 22-10 record at home against the Thunderbirds. The two teams last met in the regular season last March, where USU posted its first 196.000 score of the year to defeat SUU, 196.000-195.550. Senior Sarah Landes finished in the top-five in three events on her way to take third in the all-around with a 38.700. Senior Susie Miller claimed the floor event title, as Utah State put up a 49.075 as a team on that event.

Utah State is currently ranked No. 36 in the nation with a 194.579 average. The Aggies average a 48.879 on vault, good for 28th in the country, a 48.317 on bars to rank 49th, a 48.608 on beam to rank 24th and a 48.775 on floor to rank 34th. Individually, junior McKinzey Martinez is ranked 49th in the all-around with a 39.005 average. Redshirt sophomore Hayley Sanzotti is tied for 50th on beam with a 9.796 average. In the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference, Martinez is ranked fourth in the all-around, while Landes is seventh with a 38.813 average. Martinez is eighth on vault with a 9.817 average, Sanzotti is third on beam while Martinez is seventh with a 9.758 average. Sophomore Bailey McIntire is fourth on floor with a 9.821 average, while Landes is 10th with a 9.767 average.

Following Friday's meet, Utah State will travel to Cedar City, Utah, to face Southern Utah and Denver in a Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference tri-meet Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
