USU Greeks Socialize at Retirement Facilities
Utah State University’s Greek community — members of campus sororities and fraternities — visited five retirement centers in and around Logan Saturday, March 25. The activity kicked off a year-long series of community service events.
Steve Morrill, Sigma Nu president, organized the community service event, which will continue once a month throughout the calendar year. Morrill said the event is part of an effort to increase service-oriented projects among the Greek community as a whole.
“Saturday was just the beginning of activities that we’re excited to see grow throughout the year,” Morrill said. “Our goal was to initiate a long-term project that will impact the community. Volunteering at retirement homes each month seemed like a perfect idea.”
More than 50 Greeks from Sigma Nu, Chi Omega, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Delta Sigma Phi, Theta Nu Xi and Kappa Delta participated in the event.
Jen Friedel, a member of Chi Omega, said they spent the morning playing bingo, chess and board games with the residents.
“The staff at Sunshine Terrace was accommodating and glad to have us,” Friedel said. “They said even just visiting means so much to some of the residents.”
Mike Erlacher, a member of Sigma Nu, participated in the event and said he’s looking forward to next month’s visit.
“We had a lot of support for this month’s event,” Erlacher said. “I’m already excited to go back in April.”
Erlacher played chess with a resident at Sunshine Terrace and he has already scheduled a rematch for his next visit.
“He beat me both times,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons I’m going back.”
Utah State’s Greek community cooperated with Logan House, Cache Valley Assisted Living Center, Sunshine Terrace, Logan Nursing and Rehab and Terrace Grove retirement homes for the project.
The next visits are scheduled Saturday, April 22.
