Utah State University Eastern and Intermountain Electronics are once again offering students a unique opportunity to launch careers in the skilled trades through a paid internship.
The 90-day pre-apprenticeship program allows students to earn eight USU credits while training for careers in electrical or welding. No prior experience is required. Participants receive paid on-the-job training, housing in USU Eastern residence halls, a campus meal plan and tuition for internship-related college credits, all funded by Intermountain Electronics. Students also earn an hourly wage while completing the internship.
While living on campus during the internship, participants can attend student events and take part in campus traditions.
Jordan Merrill of Brigham City said the program came at the perfect time.
“I was at a point in my life where I needed to find something where I could find success,” Merrill said. “It almost sounded too good to be true.”
After confirming the opportunity was legitimate, he said the housing and meal plan made relocating to Price possible.
“It helped me discover what I’m good at and set me up for success,” he said.
Helper resident Makai Rogers enrolled to begin working toward an electrical career.
“They helped get me started with the tools I needed, and the instructors are phenomenal,” Rogers said. “The partnership between USU Eastern and Intermountain Electronics made everything smooth and very hands-on.”
The internship has also helped participants from outside Utah begin new careers.
For Jared Pleass of Aurora, Colorado, the internship provided a successful transition from the Marine Corps into civilian life.
“I came in with zero fabrication experience,” Pleass said. “The willingness to teach and share knowledge made all the difference.”
The program is open to students who have graduated from high school or earned a GED and are at least 18 years old. Students interested in participating must apply for admission to USU Eastern and complete the Intermountain Electronics internship application.
The fall 2026 cohort begins Aug. 31, with additional cohorts offered each spring and summer. Applications for the Fall 2026 Pre-Apprenticeship Program are now open.
