USU Department of English Speakers Series Presents Phebe Jensen

The Utah State University Department of English Speakers Series continues Wednesday, Feb. 4, with a presentation by associate professor Phebe Jensen.

Jensen presents “Religion and Revelry in Shakespeare’s Festive World” at 12:30 p.m. in USU’s Haight Alumni Center (approximately 650 N. 800 East, Logan). The event is free and all are invited.

 

Jensen said her recent work examines the relationship between traditional festive pastimes — such as Midsummer pageants, May games and Whitsuntide celebrations — and Shakespeare’s plays. Her work uncovers the political and social significance of early modern festivity and how it relates to Shakespeare’s era. Jensen further argues that Shakespeare is a “festive traditionalist” who incorporated the use of traditional pastimes and religious issues in his work. “Religion and Revelry in Shakespeare’s Festive World” also reveals the importance of religion in Shakespeare’s plays.

 

The USU Department of English Speakers Series, part of the Caine School of the Arts, was established to promote the value of arts and humanities in American public life. The series features faculty writing and research accomplishments and noted visiting authors and scholars sharing their work.
