USU's Debate Team Takes First at Tournament

Utah State University’s speech and debate team returned from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., where members took first place in debate during a tournament Oct. 14-15. Overall, USU took third place as team at the tournament, competing against 31 schools from eight states, according to coach Tom Worthen.

In debate, competing against 41 debate teams, USU took first with the team of Eric Peatross and Di Lewis. Tom Grover and Trevor Linderman placed fourth in debate, and Natalie Cook and Megan Scott placed fifth in novice debate.

 

Individually, Mike Smith placed first in novice persuasion and third in novice informative speaking. Jane McBride placed fifth in persuasion and third in informative speaking. Trevor Linderman placed first in persuasion, with Eric Peatross taking first in dramatic duo interpretation. Bryce Draper placed fourth in persuasion and fourth in after dinner speaking. Megan Scott took second in novice informative speaking. Shannon Johnson placed fifth in impromptu speaking. Di Lewis paced first in prose interpretation.

 

The Portland event was USU’s first conference tournament. The team will compete again in the conference at Linfield College in Oregon in a November meet. USU has taken first place in the conference for the last two years.
