USU Debate Team Does Well Again

Utah State University’s Speech and Debate team took first place in debate in a tournament held Nov. 13-15 at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.

Competing against 34 colleges and universities at the tournament, USU freshman Brayden O’Brien took top honors in the final round on a two to one decision against the top speaker at the tournament from Boise State University, according to Coach Tom Worthen.

Overall, the USU team placed third at the tournament.

Additional individual winners in informative speaking included Garrett Smith in first place and Haylee Hunsaker took fifth place. In persuasive speaking Mariah Andreasen took third, Joseph Allred placed fourth and Brayden O’Brien took sixth. O’Brien was also recognized as the fifth top speaker in debate at the tournament. Out of 16 who competed in the first elimination round, Mariah Andreasen, Joseph Allred and Ben Powell competed in the octo-final round to tie for ninth place.

With two of the three conference tournaments completed, USU has placed first in debate at each tournament, according to Worthen.

The team competes one more time Jan. 29-31, 2016, at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.
