USU College of Science Recognizes Top Scholars

Utah State University’s College of Science hosted an awards ceremony and dinner April 26, 2016, to recognize the college’s top scholars.
“Today we honor our students for their hard work and for their service,” said College of Science Dean Maura Hagan. “We also honor our faculty and staff for their mentorship of students, excellence in research and their efforts in providing meaningful learning opportunities.”
Valedictorian for the college is Elise Griffin and Dean’s Scholars are Jacob Blotter and Jared Jepson. The college’s Scholar of the Year is Jordan Jensen.
Rebecca Whitney is the college’s Peak Prize Undergraduate Researcher of the Year and Ricki Burnett was recognized at the college’s nominee for the university’s Legacy of Utah State Award.
College of Science student senator Joseph Day was recognized for his service during the 2015-16 academic year. Day was re-elected by his peers and returns as senator for the 2016-2017 academic year.
Honored at the ceremony were Day’s fellow 2015-16 Science Council members Richie Albrechtsen, Cody Bills, Kaleb Chatland, Emily Edwards, Marcus Jackman, Jenessa Lemon, Blake Johnson, Makenna Johnson, Maggi Jolley, Lindsey Parrish, Lucas Reich, Joshua Salisbury, Michaela Salisbury, Katie Robinson and Jordan Wilkes.
2015-16 College of Science Ambassadors Coleman Baker, Andrea Brandley, Marcos Garcia, Josh Gathro, Andrea Halling, Amelia Johnson, Blake Johnson, Katie Sweet and Rebecca Whitney were also honored at the ceremony.
Michael Channer, Brinley Labrum and Robert McDermott were recognized as the college’s 2015-16 USU Presidential Doctoral Research Fellows.
Graduate Student (PhD) Researcher of the Year is Lorin Neuman-Lee and Graduate Student (MS) Research of the Year is Amy Moser.
Jesse Hicks was recognized as Graduate Student Teacher of the Year.
Faculty Teacher of the Year is Camille Fairbourn and Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year is Randy Lewis.
David Farrelly was honored as Faculty Researcher of the Year.
Jürgen Symanzik was recognized as a 2015 American Statistical Association Fellow and Michael Cortez was honored as a 2016 Ecological Society of America Early Career Fellow.
Susannah French was honored as the 2016 recipient of the USU Center for Women and Gender’s Early Career Award.
Geraldine Child was recognized as Non-Exempt Staff Member of the Year and Linda Skabelund was honored as Exempt Staff Member of the Year.
Kami McNeil was recognized as a 2016 recipient of USU’s Diversity Award.
Faculty and staff members Daniel Coster, Michael David, David Farrelly, Thomas Lachmar and John Stark received special recognition for 25 years of service.
Also honored at the ceremony were Tim Gilbertson, Marianne Harris, Eric Held and Michael Piep for 15 years of service.
Tianbiao (Leo) Liu and Maria Rodriguez were recognized as first-year faculty members.
Dane Hansen and Robert Heal were honored upon their retirement from the university.
The College of Science includes the academic departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Geology and Physics.
