USU College of Science Recognizes Top Scholars
Graduating senior Carson Jessop, 2015 Valedictorian of USU's College of Science, was among scholars honored at the college’s April 23 awards ceremony.
Utah State University’s College of Science hosted an awards ceremony and reception April 23, 2015, to recognize the college’s top scholars.
“Today we honor our students for their hard work and for their service,” said Lisa Berreau, interim dean and professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “We also honor our faculty and staff for their mentorship of students, excellence in research and their efforts in providing meaningful learning opportunities.”
Valedictorian for the college is T. Carson Jessop and Dean’s Scholars are Hannah Rush and Austin Spence. The college’s Scholar of the Year is Benjamin Pound.
Cathy Mangum is the college’s Peak Prize Undergraduate Researcher of the Year. Mangum, a graduating senior at USU Uintah Basin, was also the college’s nominee for the 2015 Legacy of Utah State Award. She was awarded that honor at the university’s April 11 Robins Awards.
Jill Montgomery was named Undergraduate Teaching Fellow of the Year.
Receiving special recognition were 2015 Goldwater Scholar Katie Sweet and Goldwater Honorable Mention recipient David Griffin.
A-Pin recipients are Nicholas Bailey, Coleman Baker, Terek Behunin, Jenessa Blotter, Caroline Bourgeois, Kendra Bunnell, Ryan Carlson, Eliza Haroldsen, Michael Hoggard, Jared Jacobsen, Jordan Jensen, Joseph Jepson, Jared Jepson, Mallory Latimer, Adam Lowe, Keaton Maguire, Samuel Malan, Jacob Piland, Benjamin Pound, Amanda Rasmussen, Jacob Rounds, Jordan Rozum, Braiden Shumway, Autumn Slade, Austin Spence, Katie Sweet, Andrea Thomas, Brett Wheeler and Timothy Wright.
College of Science student senator Mikayla Mills was recognized for her service and as a 2015 recipient of the Utah State University Citizenship Award.
Honored at the ceremony were Mills’ fellow 2013-14 Science Council members Sarah Anderson, Coleman Baker, Jacob Blotter, Cade Cloward, Jonathan Conger, Makenna Johnson, Tyler Lemon, Henry Linford, Yanisa Longchamps, Kaitlin Loosle, Dan Morris, Jake Muller, Chris Peterson, Zach Portman, Lucas Reich, Katie Robinson, Hayley Williams, along with 2015-16 senator-elect Joseph Day.
2014-15 College of Science Ambassadors Jarod Benowitz, Shari Duarte, Marcos Garcia, Josh Gathro, Andrea Halling, Taylor Jensen, Rebecca Petrick, James Rohwer, Andrea Thomas and Tanner Tripp were also honored at the ceremony.
Recognized as Honors graduates were Alexandria Hayden Campbell, Emily Frampton, David Gage, Makda Gebre, Brooke Hansen, Jorgen Madsen, Rachel Nydegger Rozum, Austin Spence, Karen Tew and Marilize Van Der Walt.
Undergraduates receiving scholarships, many established by the college’s alumni, donors, faculty and staff, were recognized at the gathering. Honorees include Jay Argue, Eric Ashby, Erin Banks, Jenessa Blotter, Brantley Bond, Ricki Burnett, Jordan Burns, Cole Chambers, Nicholas Chaney, Samuel Christensen, Sean Christensen, Kelli Dowd, Landon Fehlberg, Joshua Gathro, Andrea Halling, Lauren Holt, Jared Jacobsen, Jordan Jensen, Joseph Jepson, Bryce Kellogg, Brian Langston, Kailey Leavitt, Samuel Malan, Isabella Muffoletto, Kaitlin Murphy, Samantha Rupp, Alexandre Rego, Kylee Sorensen, Alexander Souvall, Kelsey Tolbert, Brett Wheeler, Gunnar Wolfe, Michael Woolley and Devon Wright.
Graduate Student (PhD) Researcher of the Year is Gareth Hopkins and Graduate Student Teacher of the Year is Andrew Durso.
Graduate fellowships and scholarships went to Michael Channer, Derek Harris, Brinley Labrum, Hannah Lewis, Robert McDermott and Shabnam Mohammadi.
Graduate student Sajeena Horvath and recent graduate Zachary Butterfield were recognized as National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship program honorable mention recipients.
Alvan Hengge was recognized as the 2015 recipient of USU’s D. Wynne Thorne Career Research Award, the university’s top research honor.
Faculty Teacher of the Year is Bradley Davidson and Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year is Tom Chang. Faculty Researcher of the Year is J.R. Dennison and Carl Farley was recognized as Faculty Advisor of the Year.
Michelle Baker was honored as the college’s first nominee for the University Service Award.
Faculty members Jon Takemoto received special recognition for 40 years of service. Ian Anderson and Anne Anderson were honored for 35 years of service. Keith Mott and Dennis Welker were recognized for 30 years of service.
Also recognized at the ceremony were Susanne Janecke, Nancy Smart, Jim Wheeler and Henry Zwick for 25 years of service.
Shawna Johnson, James MacMahon and LuAnn Stocking were honored upon their retirement from the university.
The College of Science includes the academic departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Geology and Physics.
