USU College of Science Recognizes Top Scholars

Utah State University’s College of Science hosted an awards ceremony and banquet March 30, 2017, to recognize the college’s top scholars.
“Today we honor our students for their hard work and for their service,” said College of Science Dean Maura Hagan. “We also honor our faculty and staff for their mentorship of students, excellence in research and their efforts in providing meaningful learning opportunities.”
Valedictorian for the college is Corey Kimzey and the college’s Scholar of the Year is Kendra Bunnell.
Jenna Hawley Bouvang is the college’s Peak Prize Undergraduate Researcher of the Year and Mikaela Pulsipher was recognized as the college’s Undergraduate Teaching Fellow of the Year.
College of Science student senator Joseph Day was recognized for his service during the 2016-17 academic year. Day served as the college’s senator for two consecutive years.
Abram Bernard, Camden DeBruler, Zach Gibson, Brinley Labrum, Jill Lundell, Robert McDermott, Elizabeth Ogata, Randall Reese, Amy Springer, Tatiana Soboleva, and Emily Virgin were recognized as the college’s USU Presidential Doctoral Research Fellows.
Graduate Student (PhD) Researchers of the Year are Allen Anderson and Ivan Popov. Graduate Student (MS) Researcher of the Year is Jamie Kingsford Burgess.
Ian McGahan was recognized as Graduate Student Teacher of the Year.
Graduate students Emily Sadler and Kathryn Weglarz were recognized as recipients of the university’s 2016-2017 USU Student Diversity Award.
Monica Schruhl was honored as Non-Exempt Staff Member of the Year and Karalee Ransom was honored as Exempt Staff Member of the Year.
Faculty Teacher of the Year is Benjamin Burger and Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year is Susannah French.
Zach Gompert was honored as Faculty Researcher of the Year.
Ted Evans received the Faculty University Service Award and Tonya Triplett was recognized as the recipient of USU’s Student Retention Teacher of the Year.
Alex Boldyrev was honored as the university 2017 Graduate Mentor of the Year. Al Savitzky was recognized as recipient of the university’s 2016-2017 USU Administrator Diversity Award.
Lisa Berreau was recognized for her induction into the 2017 Class of American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows.
Lawrence Cannon was honored for 55 years of service. Robert Schunk was recognized for 40 years of service and Dave Liddell was honored for 35 years of service.
Jim Evans, Dave Bregenzer and Bela Fejer were honored for 30 years of service. Recognized for 25 years of service were Bradley Kropp, Jim Powell, Michael Taylor, Charlie Torre, Zhi-Qiang Wang and Paul Wolf.
Bradley Davidson, Alvan Hengge, Karalee Ransom and Eric Rowley were honored for 20 years of service. Buckley Banham and Yucheng Zhao were recognized for 15 years of service.
Noelle Beckman, Ryan Jackson, Lauren Lucas, Shawn Miller, Will Pearse, Oscar Varela and Bonnie Waring were recognized as first-year faculty members.
Jim Albee, Anne Anderson, Rand Hooper, Nancy Smart and Stanley Williams were honored upon their retirement from the university.
The College of Science includes the academic departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Geology and Physics.
