USU's College of HASS Timepiece Features Robert Winward

HASS Hour is a monthly series offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Utah State University. The series puts a faculty member or administrator in the spotlight to share insights, research or creative activity.

August’s featured speaker is USU associate professor Robert Winward who presents “Frankenstein’s Yodel: Sparking Innovation Abroad” Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Logan Golf and Country Club (710 N. 1500 East, Logan).

Speakers are featured in a 10-minute “TimePiece.”

HASS Hour begins with a social gathering at 5:15 p.m., and the TimePiece begins at approximately 6 p.m. Food is served during the social hour. Admission is $10 for individuals and $18 for couples.

Winward is a faculty member in USU’s Department of Art and director of the highly successful USU Summer Design Program in Switzerland. Winward first developed professional contacts in Switzerland while there researching visual imagery related to the travel and tourism industry. Through the contacts, he pioneered an onsite cultural immersion summer program for USU graphic design students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Among the highlights of the 2008 study abroad experience was a pilgrimage to the Great St. Bernard Monastery and Hospice.

Prior to his tenure at USU, Winward taught at Boise State University and Weber State University. He earned a master’s of fine art from Kent State University. Prior to teaching, he was director of University Publications at Weber State University and maintained a freelance business. He has worked as a creative director, art director, marketing director and illustrator. He is a past president of the University and College Designers Association. His design work has been recognized by “Print Magazine,” the Annual of American Corporate Identity, University and College Designers Association and the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

historic Swiss poster

Winward directs the USU Summer Design Program in Switzerland. This summer, students attempted to recreate the image from this famous poster as they used snowshoes to reach the Great St. Bernard Monastery and Hospice. Weather did not allow that.
