USU Choirs Get Groovy Performing Songs from the '70s

The combined choirs of the Utah State University Music Department join forces with the local cover band The Fender Benders to present “That ‘70s Concert” Friday, Feb. 11.

“It’s been exciting to see the students learn tunes from the ‘70s,” said Cory Evans, director of choral activities at USU. “They are having fun singing the songs and are expanding their ability to perform different genres of music.”

The choral groups will perform some of the greatest hits of Styx, Led Zeppelin, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, ABBA, Boston, Kansas and many more. The songs will be a mix of standard covers inserted with choral harmonies in place of a solo singer.

“We have done our own arrangements with most of these songs so they will fit the choir genre,” Evans said. “Ours may be the first-ever choral arrangement of ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ and I’m excited to hear how it is received.”

Performing choirs include the USU Chamber Singers, University Chorale and the Women’s Choir.

The USU Chamber Singers CD, Show Me Thy Ways, was recently a Grammy Award nominee.

The concert is presented twice, first at 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m., in the USU Performance Hall. Tickets are $8 general admission and free for USU students with ID.
