USU Ceramics Guild Plans Annual Chili Bowl Sale
The Ceramics Guild at Utah State University plans one of its tastiest events of the year when the annual Chili Bowl sale launches Oct. 22. The event provides an opportunity to acquire the students’ creative work while enjoying a bowl of chili, donated this year by USU Dining Services. Best of all, when the meal is over, patrons keep the bowl.
The sale takes place at the patio area of the Taggart Student Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices vary depending on the bowl, and start at $8.
The sale is one of several fundraising events organized by the students in the ceramics guild, with proceeds going to a variety of needs.
“We make these bowls to help us get to the annual NCEC conference (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts),” said guild officer Shaleen Christensen. “The proceeds can also be used for acquiring kilns and mixers — anything that might break around the studio.”
The fundraising proceeds are also used to buy supplies and to support fees for guest artists.
All bowls in the sale are created by members of the guild, with each making approximately 25 one-of-a-kind bowls.
“The bowls are completely functional —including safe glazes — and range in size and, sometimes, shape,” Christensen said. “We’ve had round, square and even triangle bowls. Some are hand-built and some are wheel thrown. Everyone has an individual style for how each bowl is built and glazed.”
When guests arrive at the sale they are greeted by a line of tables covered with bowls, creating a colorful display to peruse before moving on to the chili.
“We put a lot of time and effort into these bowls as well as the thought into how each one will look,” Christensen said. “All are unique.”
The guild officers thanked USU Dining Services for its support of the sale.
The Ceramic Guild includes students from the ceramics program based in USU’s Department of Art and Design. In addition to the Chili Bowl sale, the guild also presents an annual holiday sale in December and a spring sale.
