USU Celebrates New Student Organic Farm
The groundbreaking celebration for the new Utah State University Student Organic Farm is scheduled Friday, April 18, at 3 p.m. at the farm site, 800 East 1750 North. The celebration is open to the public.
According to Dan Drost, Utah State University Extension vegetable specialist and celebration organizer, students interested in green choices and sustainable living are encouraged to take part in USU's student-run organic farm.
“The new organic teaching and research farm will be student operated, managed and designed,” said Drost. “The overall goal is to engage students in the discovery, development and demonstration of the diversity of the practices and science involved in organic agriculture. We are excited about this opportunity for our students.”
Students who are interested in the new organic initiative can participate in planting the first crops and meeting other people interested in organic agriculture. Groundbreaking for USU's Student Organic Farm is Friday, April 18. With the spring season approaching, work at the farm is just getting underway. Last summer, workers planted cover crops, an activity indicative of what will go on at the new farm.
