USU Cadets to Complete Water Survival Training

Cadets in Utah State University’s Air Force ROTC detachment will be briefed, then complete hands-on training in water survival during special exercises Thursday, March 29, at the HPER pool on campus. Members of the public can observe the training from the bleacher area.

“It is such a rush getting yanked through the water by a parachute, wondering if you’re going to be able to get out in time to get some air,” said cadet Brigham Moore, commenting on last year’s experience.

“The Air Force water survival training focuses on what we need to be able to handle, should we need to punch out of a jet while flying over a body of water,” said cadet Cory McClellan. “We have to know how to get out from under a collapsed chute and load an entire crew into a self-inflating raft.”

This year’s exercise is the second go-round for cadet Amanda Callister.

“I’m really excited to do the parachute thing again,” she said.

Cadet Greg Boyles, a freshman, said he is eager to participate for the first time.

“I’m excited to learn what exactly water survival entails and how to deal with such a strenuous environment under such unfortunate circumstances,” Boyles said.

“This is a chance for all of us to learn some real, life skills that we will need in the future,” said cadet John Fleshman. “There are many of us who want to fly and, if we ever get to, this will be a valuable experience for us. We’re going to get our feet wet.”
