USU's Brian Nummer Receives 'Training and Education Award’

Associate professor and food safety specialist Brian Nummer of Utah State University’s College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and USU Extension recently received a Training and Education Award as part of the 2014 National Science Foundation Food Safety Leadership Awards.

As an independent federal agency that supports progress in science and national health and welfare, the NSF chooses awardees based on criteria of innovation, design and contribution. Nummer, recognized in April at the 2014 Food Safety Summit in Baltimore, was selected by a panel of industry experts specifically for his leadership and lasting impact on food safety.

“The NSF is an industry group,” Nummer said. “So it’s nice that they can recognize academia and especially Extension through this award.”

As an Extension food safety specialist, Nummer’s contribution includes more than 25 years of service. Through directing food safety manager certification programs, he provided training for thousands of people in Utah and across the nation. He also served as a Western U.S. process authority and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points coordinator for the state of Utah.

His research specifically focuses around retail and food service safety. With this expertise, Nummer created and directs the Retail-foodservice Food Safety Consortium, a collaboration between government, academic and industry experts where information related to retail grocery and restaurant food safety is shared.
