USU Associate Dean Wynn Walker Elected Fellow in ASCE

Wynn Walker, associate dean in the College of Engineering, was recently elected to the grade of Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineering.

Walker is a leader and motivator for the development of on-line courses in irrigation engineering and for the professional training of practitioners. A substantial part of Walker’s efforts has been the recruitment and development of young faculty and specialists. Walker has been a member of the ASCE for 34 years and is key in the development of irrigation engineering programs and curricula in irrigation.

 

“Being a member of the ASCE, or any professional society, connects you to the profession and your colleagues, and keeps you abreast of what is happening in the field,” Walker said.

 

To be nominated as ASCE Fellow, a current member must have at least 10 years of engineering experience. Walker has contributed significantly to the modernization of irrigation systems throughout the world. He assembled and published text on surface irrigation engineering and developed and tested software to automate the computations associated with simulation, design and evaluation. The text and software are the first to treat Surge Flow systems.

 

Walker has spent much of his career as an advisor to students working to obtain master’s and doctorate degrees. Walker said advising is “one of the things that keeps me in academia rather than private consulting.”

 

Walker obtained a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Utah State, a master’s in civil engineering from Colorado State University, and rounded out his education at CSU, where he obtained a doctorate in agricultural engineering.
