USU Alumni Band to Perform 5 Free Summer Concerts

By Emma Lee |

LOGAN, Utah — The Department of Music at Utah State University is proud to present one of Cache Valley’s most cherished summer traditions — the Alumni Band concerts, directed by Lane Weaver, Nicholas Morrison and Thomas Rohrer.

This summer’s five concerts are free and open to the public, with no tickets or reserved seating required. Audiences of all ages are welcome.

The USU Summer Alumni Band was founded in 1963 by Director of Bands Emeritus Max F. Dalby. It currently draws from a roster of over 500 alumni of the band program at USU who continue to perform following graduation, many as professional musicians or music teachers.

“It's part history. It's tradition. They're fun, family-friendly, crowd-friendly concerts that engage the audience,” said Band Director Lane Weaver. “It's nice to go hear a concert on a summer evening.”

The incredible talent of these musicians makes it possible to put on each concert with just one 90-minute rehearsal on the day of the performance.

“A large part of the success is the dedication of our alumni who make this a priority every summer, for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of our community here at USU and in Logan, Cache Valley,” said Dr. Weaver. “It's pretty remarkable what the group is able to play and put together for each concert.”

Concert Schedule

Each concert will have unique programming. The June 8 concert will feature guest performers from the Lyric Repertory Company presenting selections from their upcoming production of Bright Star, highlighting ongoing collaboration within the USU arts community.

The June 22 performance will feature a solo performance by USU horn professor Joel Ockerman and will also include music in recognition of Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 29, just ahead of Independence Day, the concert will feature patriotic selections and special guest performances by the American Festival Chorus and vocal soloist Nicole Vander Does, a Utah State alumna and professional singer with the U.S. Air Force.

The Alumni Band will also pay tribute to Larry Smith and Dennis Griffin, both USU Music Department emeritus professors who recently passed away.
