USU Alumni Band Performs July 22

For their fourth performance of the summer, the Utah State University Alumni Band will play a variety of musical styles Sunday, July 22, at 7 p.m., in the Daines Concert Hall in the Chase Fine Arts Center, with special guests Lynn Maxine Rosen, violin, and Tad Calcara, clarinet, of the Utah Symphony, along with guest conductor James M. Bankhead.

Lynn Maxine Rosen will accompany the band on St. Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. Rosen plays on an Italian violin made in 1830. She currently chairs the Kol Ami Concert Series in Salt Lake City. 

Tad Calcara will perform Murray’s Collage for Clarinet and Band with the band. Calcara has been principal clarinet at the Utah Symphony since 1999. He also leads the New Deal Swing Band, which specializes in classic jazz and swing from the 1930s and 40s. 

James M. Bankhead, former head of the Department of Music in the Caine College of the Arts, will conduct Jenkins’ American Overture for Band and Ticheli’s An American Elegy. From 1985-1991, Bankhead served as the commander and conductor of the United States Air Force Band. 

Nicholas Morrison will conduct the band in playing Strike up the Band, Blessed Are They from A German Requiem, I’ll See You Again, Sol Y Sombra and The Free Lance March.

The last Alumni Band concert of the season will be held August 5 in the Daines Concert Hall in the Chase Fine Arts Center on the USU campus. Performances begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
