USU Alumni Band July 12: Paris Comes to America
Every summer appreciative crowds gather on Utah State University's Quad to enjoy free outdoor concerts provided by USU’s Alumni Band. The next concert is Sunday, July 12, at 7 p.m.
The Utah State University Alumni Band’s next concert is July 12 at 7 p.m. on the USU Quad.
“We’ll explore the way French music and the melting pot culture of New Orleans provided a fertile ground for the development of jazz and American popular music,” said Nick Morrison, conductor and senior associate dean in the Caine College of the Arts. “We’ll discover how jazz, in turn, influenced the classical music of France.
The performance will include music from George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, excerpts from Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud and Scenes from the Louvre by Norman Dello Joio, Morrison said.
“We’ll move into jazz with Big Band Dixie that will feature a Dixieland combo led by trumpeter Bruce Dalby,” Morrison said. “Other music, both American and French, will round out the program.”
Dalby is a professor of music at the University of New Mexico. He received his undergraduate education from USU and completed his graduate degree at the University of Illinois, where he received his master of science and doctor of education degrees in music education. Bruce’s father, Max Dalby, founded the Alumni Band while he was a USU faculty member in the 1960s.
Mark Emile, associate professor in the music department in the Caine College of the Arts, will be the soloist for Jules Massenet’s Medidation from Thais. Emile has conducted professional, university and youth orchestras and has studied with many well-known conductors. His violin background includes a DMA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Emile has performed in many professional orchestras, including the San Diego, Omaha and Utah Symphonies. He has performed on stage with artists of all genres, performed and acted in movies and recorded movie scores for television and theaters.
This year’s upcoming concerts will be held July 26 and Aug. 9. All Alumni Band performances begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Concerts will be held on the USU Quad. In case of inclement weather, performances will move to the Morgan Theatre in the Chase Fine Arts Center.
