'Upland Landscapes' Topic for Dec. 2 Water@USU Seminar
Water@USU, a Utah State University Water Initiative project, welcomes geologist Arjun Heimsath of Arizona State University to campus Tuesday, Dec. 2. Heimsath presents “Quantifying Erosion Rates and Processes across Upland Landscapes” at 3:15 p.m. in the Engineering building, room 101. His talk is free and open to all.
“Soil-covered upland landscapes comprise a critical part of the habitable world,” says Heimsath, associate professor in ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration. “Our understanding of how these landscapes evolve as a function of different climatic, tectonic and geologic regimes is important across a wide range of disciplines.”

Heimsath’s research focuses on the need for a field-based, mechanistic and quantitative understanding of landscape processes and evolution.
“I believe that answering important scientific questions should also help solve important and related environmental, social and resource management problems,” he says.
The Water@USU Seminar Series resumes in early 2009 following the winter break.
Water@USU is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory, the colleges of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Natural Resources, Science, Engineering, Agriculture and the Huntsman School of Business. Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout campus and the community.
