Utah State Softball Earns NFCA Academic Honors

Several Utah State softball players, as well as the team as a whole, have been named All-America Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for the 2013-14 school year.

“I am really proud of the team and especially these individuals for being committed to their academics,” said USU head coach Steve Johnson. “Our number one priority is to graduate our student-athletes and prepare them for life after college and these student-athletes are prime examples why the student part comes first.”

The softball team was named an NFCA All-Academic team, ranking 85th in the nation with an overall GPA of 3.12. Utah State is one of just two Mountain West teams to make the list, as Nevada is ranked 93rd with a team GPA of 3.075.

To be named an NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete, a student-athlete must earn a 3.5 or better grade point average for the entire school year.

On the current Aggie roster, sophomore catcher Kendsey Hill, an elementary education major, has a 3.55 GPA. Three of last year’s graduating seniors, Samantha Larsen, Allison Lenzora and Annie Thomas were also recognized. Larsen graduated in May, 2014, with a 3.61 GPA in health, physical education and recreation, while Lenzora earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies with a wellness emphasis and a GPA of 3.74. Thomas will complete her degree in business in May, 2015, with a 3.50 GPA. Two of last season’s freshmen who are no longer with the program, Abby Indreland and Morgan Carter, were also recognized for their work in the classroom.
