Two Shows at NEH Museum
Utah State University's Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art begins the new year with two exhibits. One features the work of Utah State faculty member Jane Catlin, while the other features the work of California-based artist Charles Garabedian.
Catlin's solo exhibition, Jane Catlin: Adaptations, is now open and can be seen at the museum through May 1.

An artist and associate professor of art at Utah State, Catlin actively exhibits nationally and administers the university's art education program. In 2002, she was awarded a prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, established by the late Lee Krasner, respected American painter and wife of Jackson Pollock.
Adaptations includes a series of recent artworks completed during Catlin's 2002-2003 sabbatical. The images portray her exploration of environmental changes resulting from population growth and increased consumption. (read more)
The second exhibition, Charles Garabedian: Works on Paper, 1965-2001, opens Jan. 27 at the museum. The exhibit features nearly 30 paintings, ranging from small- to large-scale. The artworks are crowded compositions, often featuring richly colored and fanciful figures in action. His earlier works are narrative, inspired by experiences during the Second World War as staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

Garabedian, though unfamiliar to most in Utah, is a celebrated senior member of the American art scene. Born and raised in Detroit, Garabedian served in the U.S. Air Force (1942-1945) and rose to the rank of staff sergeant, before completing a master of fine arts degree at the University of California in Los Angeles. He has since been included in dozens of exhibitions, is represented in public and private collections around the world, and was awarded several prestigious awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1977) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1979)
