Track & Field Takes Momentum to Montana State Invitational This Friday

Utah State's [University] track and field teams are set to compete Friday, Jan. 22, at the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, Mont.
Track and field teams from Montana State, Montana and Idaho State will accompany Utah State at this week's invitational.
The invitational will kick off with the field events at 4 p.m., while the track events will begin at 5:15 p.m. The meet is scheduled to close at 8:30 p.m., with the men's and women's 1,600m relay.
After a stellar start to the 2016 indoor season, veteran head coach Gregg Gensel looks forward to a meet where his team has set high expectations.
“What pleased me most about last weekend was that our success didn't come just from the veterans,” Gensel said. “Some younger athletes stepped up, while the veterans did what they were supposed to do. It's exciting to see that across the board we did some great things this past weekend.
“The Montana State Invitational is team scored, and our team has talked about the goal of winning this meet. It’s early the season, so I don’t like to stress about winning this early, but since it’s the team’s idea, we’re planning to put people in spots to give us a chance to accomplish that goal.”
Freshman Leaugen Fray emerged as a young talent at the Ed Jacoby Invitational, where he won the high jump with a mark of 2.06m (6-9). Fray shares his team’s goal, hoping to claim a team victory.
“In high school I didn’t feel as connected to the team, but in college, it’s so exciting to see my friends compete at such a high level,” said Fray. “I would like to set a personal record in the high jump, and as a team I would like to see us win by a large margin at this week’s meet.”
The Mountain West Indoor Championships will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 25-27, just 12 days before the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala., on March 11.
