Tough Newts

In a unique study that examines amphibian response to habitat destruction, USU student researcher Kristin Bakkegard found that the rough-skinned newts of Mount St. Helens’ timber-strewn blowdown zone have mingled with wayfarers from afar to replenish their genetic diversity. The newt population has fared well in the area because of the diversity, which increases survival rates.
