{THINK} Retention Matters
{Think} Retention Matters is the theme of a new retention symposium, the first held at Utah State University. The Thursday, Oct. 11, symposium is sponsored by the office of the Provost and the office of Retention and First-Year Experience.
All faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to attend sessions to be held in the Taggart Student Center.
“Join colleagues from across the university for forums, workshops and panel discussions directed toward assisting colleges, departments, offices and individuals in their efforts to contribute to student success,” said Noelle Call, director of USU’s office of Retention and First-Year Experience. “This inaugural event brings together faculty and staff to facilitate a discussion of lessons learned and best practices regarding student persistence and retention.”
Registration is available online.
“Vincent Tinto and other leading retention theorists agree that student success initiatives should be not only centered on improving retention, but should focus primarily on improvements in the quality of student life and learning,” Call said. “There are many practices on the Utah State campus that support this theory.”
Symposium workshops and presentations by faculty, advisors and professional staff will provide an opportunity to showcase what we do well, assess where we can do better and learn the resources available to support departmental efforts, Call said.
The symposium will be joined by USU President Stan Albrecht as the luncheon speaker, who will offer comments titled “Sharing the Responsibility for Student Success Really Does Matter.”
The symposium opens with a continental breakfast from 8:15-8:50 a.m. in the Taggart Student Center Stevenson Ballroom, with sessions beginning at 9 a.m. and running through mid-afternoon.
