Theatre Faculty and Students Invited to Prestigious Design Session

Two faculty members and two graduate students from Utah State University's Theatre Arts Department have been invited to attend the third Summer Intensive in Scenic and Costume Design: The Collaborative Process at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Those invited include faculty members Dennis Hassan, scenic design, and Nancy Hills, costume design, and graduate students Amanda Profaizer, costume design, and Darrin Brooks, scenic design.

 

The design sessions, held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., are offered in conjunction with the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival and feature noted designers Ming Cho Lee and Constance Hoffman. The workshop runs for two weeks in July.

 

"This will be an opportunity for our faculty and students to work with two of the top designers in the country," said department head Colin Johnson. "Indeed, Ming Cho Lee has been an iconic name in theatre and opera around the world for more than 40 years."

 

A nationwide screening process is completed before faculty and students are invited to attend the design session. Fewer than 15 invitations were presented, so Utah State University is well represented, Johnson noted.

 

Participants will be divided into design teams of a director, scenic designer and costumer designer. The featured productions that can be assigned for the project include The Tempest, The Crucible, David Hare's Stuff Happens and Strauss' Electra.
