The Guy Who Went to Ipanema

USU faculty member and guitarist Mike Christiansen spent his recent sabbatical in Brazil studying the sultry musical style and Afro-Brazilian rhythms of the area. His efforts are reflected in his new book, Bossa Nova and Samba for Guitar. Christiansen’s Brazilian colleagues gave his book their stamp of approval and said his playing sounded like a “carioca,” a local.

For more information, contact Mike Christiansen, professor and director of Guitar Studies, Department of Music, College of HASS, Utah State University, 435-797-3011. Christiansen is the author of Bossa Nova and Samba for Guitar, (Mel Bay Publications, November 2005) as well as multiple books on guitar technique. His student guitar ensembles can be heard in concert Tuesday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall on the USU campus.
